Spacious Places are a new not-for-profit organisation who design and create beautiful, therapeutic spaces for people who are receiving support after experiencing violence. To help them shape their services, they are seeking input from organisations who work with survivors of violence (but welcome input from other organisations). There is a link to their survey below.
They have recognised that organisations who work with survivors are often working with limited funding and have to prioritise direct support for their clients. This can mean that physical spaces within refuges, support centres, hostels etc. are functional, with their full potential unrealised.
Research shows that trauma-informed spaces – where each aspect from the colour of the walls to the layout of the furniture has been considered – can have a profoundly positive impact on a person’s mood, behaviour and healing journey. In the words of founder Ellie Brewer; “We want every space to say, come in, welcome, you’ve been thought about”.
Spacious Places recognise that envisioning and designing a space, purchasing items, painting and decorating, and building furniture is time consuming, so they work alongside other third-sector organisations to support the creation of Spacious Places within their buildings.
