carers rights day

Dudley Carers Alliance is encouraging Dudley borough employers to sign up to become carer friendly employers, as part of Carers Rights Day 2016.

The alliance is a partnership organisation led by Dudley Council which was formed earlier this year to support the many people caring for family members or friends across Dudley Borough.

Carers Rights Day takes place on Friday 25 November, hosted by the national charity Carers UK. It aims to bring together organisations to improve the lives of carers and encourages carers to get to know their rights and find out how to get the support they are entitled to

Dudley Carers Alliance is launching its carer friendly employers initiative on Carers Rights Day. They will be working to encourage employers to create a supportive working environment for carers in the workplace.

Supporting carers to manage the sometimes difficult job of balancing work with caring responsibilities can deliver real benefits to employers as well as helping individuals and their families. Statistics indicate that one in nine people in the average workforce will be an unpaid carer for someone who is older, has disabilities or is seriously ill.

The alliance’s initiative wants to ensure that more carers are able to work in environments that support them with their caring responsibilities.

They will be working with local employers and encouraging them to sign a pledge to become a carer friendly employer. This will mean they recognise the value of a carer’s caring role and recognise and respond positively to carers’ needs to balance their caring role with their employment.

Dudley Council has signed up to the pledge, along with Dudley Clinical Commissioning Group, The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, Dudley Council for Voluntary Services and Sainsbury’s Amblecote store. The alliance is now working with other Dudley borough organisations to help them to become carer friendly employers. They will be hosting a carer friendly employer’s event in the New Year where employers can find out more and sign up.

Councillor Qadar Zada, cabinet lead for adult social care, Dudley Council said:

“Nearly half of carers work alongside their caring role. To combine the two, carers need to have an understanding employer who appreciates their caring commitments, along with working arrangements which can be flexible, as required. We want carers to be able to work in an environment that supports them.

Carers Rights Day is a great launch for Dudley Carers Alliance’s initiative to promote carer friendly employers and I hope that local employers will consider signing up and making the commitment.”

The alliance is offering printed guides to becoming carer friendly for employers and employees.
